Obama's Lowlights (8/27/10)

The Economy – First the good news, retail sales were up 0.4% and the consumer price index was also up 0.3% in July, but the bad news is that foreclosures were up a whopping 9%. This means the housing market is still unstable. What’s worse is that jobless claims are going up and they at there highest level since last November. The Congressional Budget Office is predicting difficult economic times ahead. All signs are pointing to the U.S. economy moving into a double dip recession.

Wikileaks – The organization is going to release another 15,000 classified documents about the Afghanistan war. They have already released around 76,000 documents. Wikileaks is against war and will do anything to end it. However, this effort is only putting our troops in harms way.

Social Security – Social Security will pay out more this year than it receives. Hence, the program needs to be reformed soon and people on the left are calling for changes so the program remains viable. Just 5 years ago Bush tried to reform the program, but the left blocked it all the way.

Alvin Greene – The Democratic South Carolina Senate candidate was charged with a felony for showing pornography to a college student.

The NYC Mosque – Many of my readers will not like my stance – They should be allowed to build the mosque if everything is done legally. There are many claims stating that Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf has links to terror organizations and it is not clear how he is getting the funding to build the mosque. Let the FBI investigate and if he is clean he should be allowed to build. I do not like it, but I do not like placing exceptions to the law.

Gay Marriage – Whether you are for or against gay marriage, it is very disheartening to have a judge overrule the will of the people. This is exactly what Judge Vaughn Walker did when he ruled that the 2008 Proposition 8 referendum in California was unconstitutional.

Unions – Union retirement accounts may be the next bailout for the American taxpayer.

Financial Reform – Wall Street firms expect much higher civil costs since the Dodd-Frank bill gives incentives for whistle blowers.

Charities – Corporate contributions to charities declined 7.5% in 2009, but progressives still want to tax them more.

Equal Opportunity Employment Commission – They protect people from being denied employment due to race, gender, and other classifications. They are considering adding another category to protect those that have been arrested and spent time in prison.

Government Sites – Senator Darrell Issa wants to launch an investigation into government web sites that are providing misinformation about the Recover Act and Healthcare reform.

Obama – He is currently on his sixth vacation of the year at Martha’s Vineyard. This one will last a total of 11 days.
